Where are the IDEs located on my hard drive?

The default locations depend on your operating system:

  • Windows: %LocalAppData%\Programs
  • macOS: ~/Applications
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps

I would like to manually add a file for live template but I am not able to locate the config/templates folder of IntelliJ installed by Toolbox (on mac)....

Where can I find it?

Hey Martin,

Apologies for the delay.

If you go to IDE settings in Toolbox, there will be a section to set config directory and view a default one for your system. Please see the screenshot below. Hope that helps.

I would like to use newest jidea in some cli script, where can I get a path to always newest executable of the jidea?

can the toolbox provide some link on the always newest version if program installed? (such link would be automatically updated when program is udpated)

Please see Shell script name field on the IDE settings page in Toolbox.

Hello,

I recently installed intellij through the toolbox on my os x system. I can run it thanks to the toolbox fine, but not through the regular "applications" folder. I use spotlight and alfred app frequently, so this is kind of bothersome. Is there a fix to this.

Thanks Peter

How can I fully uninstall JetBrains ToolBox application, including all of it's settings and registry edits? There is no occurrence of it in my control panel's add / remove programs and the 'uninstall' option on the toolbox launcher sends me to the add / remove interface, which isn't at all helpful.

My intent is to retry with a clean install, since IDEA Ultimate has broken code-completion (cant even find 'System' and perhaps other issues that i did not bother to try after noticing that code-completion was inoperative.

What folders do i need to find & delete and which windows registry keys are set in the install of toolbox app?

Thank you for your help.

I tried changing the Tools install location in the Toolbox settings to a folder on the D drive, but when I hit apply, it just closes and resets to the previous location. I was able to change folder on the C drive. Is this by design?

I try to change the Toolbox default install location. When I press apply I get a notification message that it cannot be changed, because Toolbox is running. And it cannot be changed, because Toolbox is necessary for changing it.This is Catch 22.

Please fix this bug

I cannot change instalation folder as well

Would be nice to be able to change the location.  I tried many things (reboot, ps aux, changing folder names, ...) but it keep telling me that I already have a IDE running ....

And today it just worked. Toolbox is still installed in .local/share/JetBrains, but it does not take too much space.  and the PyCharm, MPS ... are installed where I want, in /opt/ nice.

Want to share with you some little `kasTblL`, perhaps it will be useful for somebody else besides me:

This project was developed because I work with intellij idea under Windows 10 machine and I use WSL2 and also I use JetBrainsToolbox. So the issue is - when you use toolbox then after each update of intellij idea - the toolbox will place it under special directory which means that you have no way of tracking the location of the last version of your intellij idea EXCEPT you can ask toolbox to generate shell script for you to be able to run intellij idea from command line. The generated script is a cmd file. I was not able to run that cmd file from WSL terminal the way I wanted it to run.

Hi there, it seems that the information above is outdated. I was just debugging this with one of our developers who used Toolbox to install PhpStorm on their Mac (Big Sur) and it was located in `~/Applications/JetBrains Toolbox` instead of the path currently stated for macOS.

Hi,

  1. What is the logic behind "ch-N" (N from 0 till 99 I guess) sub-folders created within toolbox folders?
  2. Is there a way to know what folder to look inside for correct installation?
  3. Could there be 2+ folders present?

This is needed for https://github.com/aik099/PhpStormProtocol/issues/46

Thank you.

Hi Alex,

1. In the current implementation, this is the separation of the update channels.

2. Could you clarify what the correct installation is? You can use the Toolbox App to install several identical IDEs with identical or different versions, e.g. EAP. All of them can be run via the JetBrains Toolbox.

3. It may be present. For example, in the case of different versions.
/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps/IDEA-U/ch-4/222.3446
/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps/IDEA-U/ch-4/223.1231
/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps/IDEA-U/ch-4/221.5921.22

The correct installation is the IDE, which should be used to open the PHP file.

Now I see, that there is no way to guess that because "correct installation" could be on any of the channels.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, yes. We have an open issue here about this TBX-2540. We hope to rework this point in future releases.

for Linux how can I change it to /opt folder instead of the /.local/share/

Hi Chidansh El!
Unfortunately, the Toolbox App installation location cannot be changed now.

Here's an open issue about it: TBX-5327.
Nevertheless, feel free to comment or upvote.

Linux related settings question: I would like to see the history file location of the rails console. The files are not in the usual locations and not inside the ch-N folders. There is a extra fuse filesystem, but it also does not contain the files. Where are the RubyMine configuration files? I found the empty settings path in the Toolbox Settings for the IDE. What does this option do?

Hi Nitrateag, I'm sorry that the first experience went like this for you. In version 2.0, it is not available to change the installation location. However, we already have EAP 2.1 available where this function is available. You can download the EAP from https://www.jetbrains.com/toolbox-app/nextversion/ or enable "Update to Early Access Program" in Toolbox App Settings. The change will be applied to all newly installed IDEs.

It works in 2.1 !

Many thanks =)
